5000 Role Models

The 5000 Role Models of Excellence was founded in 1993 by Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson in Miami, Florida. The initiative began as a grassroots program to address the dropout rate, disciplinary issues, and lack of positive male role models among young men of color in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Seeing the challenges that many young Black and Latino boys faced, Congresswoman Wilson wanted to provide them with positive influences and guidance to succeed academically and in life.

Starting with a small group of dedicated mentors, the program quickly grew as it became evident that the students involved were benefiting from the support, encouragement, and real-world advice of their mentors. Over the years, the program expanded significantly, impacting thousands of young men and extending its reach beyond Miami-Dade to other counties in Florida.

The program's success is built on the foundation of pairing students with professionals from various fields—law, education, business, medicine, and more—who commit their time to mentoring and guiding students. The organization also provides scholarships, educational resources, job training, and college preparation, with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty and guiding participants toward brighter futures. Today, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence is widely recognized for its positive impact on young men of color and continues to grow, aiming to change lives and communities through mentorship and education.
