Gearing Up for the New School Year - A Special Message to Students from the Principal

August 2, 2012

Greetings to all new and returning students of Los Angeles High School!

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year. You are about to embark on an exciting journey through high school. The great news is that all of us faculty and staff are 100% committed to supporting you, your learning and growth through these critical years. You are a valuable member of this learning community, where you will be expected to do your part, achieve and reach your potential in every possible way. Here at LA High, we hold high expectations of you and we look forward to preparing you to be college and career ready with a strong set of 21st century skills.

Roman pride and legacy are something we hold dear at the home of the Mighty Romans. Our school was the first high school established in Los Angeles –dating back to 1873. You are an integral part of this rich history and legacy – there’s no better way to honor yourselves and our school by achieving your highest goals.

As you approach each day, do keep in mind the following:

• Building Roman pride begins with you and your positive attitude. Be safe. Be responsible. Be respectful in how you conduct yourself and how you take care of our campus. Also, take a good look at the company you keep – when you surround yourself with people who have good values and work ethic, you in turn will be positively influenced.

• Bring your “A” game. Set high goals for yourself then do your very best working toward those goals. Know the A-G requirements; pass every class, earn the credits you need to graduate. Put in the hard work that’s necessary to succeed.

• Attendance matters. Getting to school and class on time, every time, shows commitment to your studies. Practice self-discipline – any dedicated athlete will tell you it takes painstaking practice and discipline to achieve greatness. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle

• Roman gear – we encourage all our students to show Roman pride by wearing LA High apparel. Just as college students demonstrate school spirit by wearing college gear, show your Roman spirit by wearing Roman gear (available at the Student Store).

• Communication is the key to a successful school and work experience. Be proactive: actively monitor your own learning, seek out your teachers for support, talk to your counselor about your academic progress, and inform and involve your parents about your learning experience.

I encourage you to be actively engaged in your learning process. Do ask questions and seek resources you need to be successful, independent, mature young-adults. Best wishes for a new school year and good luck to all our Mighty Romans!

Sincerely,

Dr. Helena Yoon-Fontamillas
Principal
