Advanced Placement & Honors Courses

Our Magnet Program highly encourages students to take advantage of our AP and Honors class offerings. Studies have shown that the rigor of a student's high school curriculum is the single best predictor of success in college. Student performance in college preparatory classes is the most important factor in the admission decision. Consequently, ALL Magnet students are encouraged to enroll in Honors and AP courses. Advanced-level courses are worth the extra effort!
  1. Advanced Placement (AP) classes are designed for students planning to attend four-year colleges and universities. These courses help prepare students for the academic rigor required at the university level.
  2. These courses are designed by leading professors in their fields. Unlike other classes offered in high school, AP offerings are taught at the college level, use college-level textbooks, and maintain college-level expectations. Taking an AP course helps students build critical-thinking skills, confidence, and the essential time management and study skills necessary for college success.
  3. In May, AP students take examinations designed by the College Board. If students score a “3” or above on this examination, they will be eligible to receive university credits for the subject(s) in which they have demonstrated proficiency.
  4. Los Angeles High School will grant high school AP credit to students who both successfully complete the course and take the AP examination. This high school AP credit will add a point to the student's grade point average (GPA) for each AP class. For example, a B normally counts for 3-grade points. However, in an AP course, the B counts for 4-grade points.
  5. AP Human Geography is designated for incoming freshmen. This course is a great introduction to advanced placement coursework and provides the confidence and support for future AP courses.
  6. Honors courses are accelerated versions of a class. They typically cover the same curriculum as a "regular version" of that class, but at an accelerated pace and are often tailored for high-achieving students.
  7. Some courses are UC-designated Honors courses. Only courses approved as honors-level by the University of California are given extra weight in a student's CSU/UC GPA.
