Office of Interventions Los Angeles High School August, 2009
Beyond the Bell Saturday School
The intervention office offers three main programs. These include, the (1) Beyond the Bell Saturday ELA, and ESL classes, (2) Intersession classes after school, and (3) applications for Supplemental Educational Services (SES) provided to students who receive free or reduced meals from their lunch applications. Another significant program provided by this office is the mental health service provided by our Extended Learning Academy and Intervention Counselor, Marco Rodriguez. The ELA administrator is Ms. (Chi)2 Ogbuagu, The intervention Counselor is Mr. Rodriguez. Mr. Guillermo Gamez or Evelyn Campos are office assistants. On Saturday, we have the Required Learning Academy (RLA) which is mainly for 9th grade students who have scored Basic (B), Below Basic (BB) or Far Below Basic (FBB) in their California Standards Test (CST) in the eighth grade. The foundations level of the Kaplan curriculum is used on Saturday in these classes. Students in the 10th, grade who have not passed either section (math or English) of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) are placed in the success or advantage level of the Kaplan curriculum in the Extended Learning Academy (ELA) on Saturdays. Before the 10th grade students take the CAHSEE, they are identified using their 9th grade CST scores or classroom grades in English or Math. The 11th and 12th grade students who have not passed the CAHSEE are invited and scheduled into the CIIP program which uses the Revolution curriculum. This is a web based program that includes homework and class problems based on the specific student’s need. ESL classes are held on Saturdays as a supplement to the regular day school classes for the beginning EL 1A/B and Intermediate EL 2A/B. The curriculum used is similar to the High Point curriculum. The curriculum was developed by a group of High Point teachers in LAUSD. Students are required to attend no less than six (6) Saturdays of the seven (7) Saturday classes. Completion of the session earns the student 2.5 elective credits. Teachers are selected using the UTLA guidelines for teacher selection. They are paid 4.3 hours at their 10thly plus differential rate per Saturday. There are five (5) ELA sessions per year. The Saturday classes are held from 8:00 AM to 12:38 PM.
Intersession The intervention office also runs the intersession classes which take place every off track period. The classes run for 6 weeks, Monday through Thursday with 2.5 hours/day of instruction from 3:15 PM to 5:45 PM. Classes offered include, Algebra 2A/B, Biology A/B, and Advanced Physical Education. Students are required to attend at least 20 of the 24 days of the intersession. Students receive 5.0 credits for completing the intersession class. To enroll for intersession, a student needs to complete an application and have it approved by a parent and a counselor. Applications are turned in at the counseling office. In order to drop a class, a student must bring a note signed by a parent within the first 5 days of the start of the intersession class. The note is then processed by Ms. (Chi) Ogbuagu in Room 407 or Evelyn Campos in the counseling office.
SES, Supplemental Educational Services, provides free tutoring to students based on their eligibility. Under the No Child Left Behind, students who fill up lunch applications and become eligible for free or reduced meals at the school site can receive free tutoring by any of the providers approved by the district. Applications for the tutoring services are sent to the homes of the eligible students. However, extra copies may be obtained at the school site in the intervention office located in the Magnet Office. There are many types of tutoring services provided by the individual providers. They include online tutoring, one-on-one, in-home, and group tutoring. Some providers may provide transportation to the tutoring site. Applications to sign up for these services have a deadline. Meal applications which determine eligibility for the tutoring services are available in the Cafeteria or the Title I Office at Los Angeles High School.
Other academic intervention programs going on at Los Angles High Schools include the Essentials Math or English classes during the school day where 11th and 12th grade students who have not passed the CAHSEE, are enrolled in these compulsory classes to prepare them for the CAHSEE. Students are also encouraged to visit the after school tutoring program run by the Title I Office. Tutors are our regular day school teachers who stay after school to tutor students who need help. It is stationed in the LAHS Library. The Title I office at LAHS provides these tutors to students mainly in math and English but also other academic areas based on need and teacher availability. Another tutoring service is provided by the ESL Office. The tutors are usually available in their classrooms and a list of available tutors can be obtained from the ESL Office by Mr. Steve Austin. Available on campus also is the Champions Community Based Program. The program sponsored by Beyond the Bell provides tutoring in all subject areas to all students. They also provide a variety of after school and lunch time activities to engage students in the high school experience. A monthly schedule of activities offered by Champions is available on the school website. Their office is currently located in the Harrison Hall complex.
